Obtaining a full licence

Class 2 Licence

  1. First hold a full Class 1 licence for at least six months.
  2. Then you present a medical certificate (application fee $39.30) and pass a theory test (theory test fee $39.70)
  3. Then you must pass a practical test (practical test fee $48.90) in a Class 2 vehicle or:
    • be assessed in a Class 2 vehicle against NZQA unit standards by an approved assessor www.ltsa.govt.nz
      or;
    • pass a Land Transport New Zealand (LTSA) - approved industry training course www.ltsa.govt.nz for class 2 vehicles.


Class 3 licence

  1. First hold your full Class 2 licence for at least six months.
    Then present a medical certificate and pass a theory test (theory test fee $39.70)- this gets you your Class 3 learner licence (application fee $39.30).
  2. After six months as Class 3 learner you can apply for your full Class 3 licence application fee $44.30).
  3. This involves passing a practical test (practical test fee $48.90) in a Class 3 combination vehicle or:
    • being assessed in a Class 3 combination vehicle against NZQA unit standards by an approved assessor www.ltsa.govt.nz
      or;
    • passing an approved industry training course www.ltsa.govt.nz for Class 3 combination vehicles (if you sit and pass this course immediately you gain your Class 3 leaner’s licence, you do not have to wait six months to get your full Class 3 licence).


Class 4 licence

  1. First hold your full Class 2 licence for at least six months.
  2. Then you present a medical certificate - this gets you your Class 4 learner licence (application fee $39.30).
  3. After six months as a Class 4 learner you can apply for a full Class 4 licence application fee $44.30).
  4. This involves passing a practical test (practical test fee $48.90) in a Class 4 vehicle or:
    • being assessed in a Class 4 vehicle against NZQA unit standards by an approved assessor www.ltsa.govt.nz
      or;
    • passing an approved industry training course www.ltsa.govt.nz for Class 4 vehicles. (if you sit and pass this course immediately you gain your Class 4 leaner’s licence, you do not have to wait six months to get your full Class 4 licence).


Class 5 licence

  1. First hold your full Class 4 licence for at least six months.
  2. Then you present a medical certificate and pass a theory test (theory test fee $39.70, unless you have previously passed a theory test for a Class 3 licence) this gets you your Class 5 learner licence (application fee $39.30).
  3. After six months as a Class 5 learner you can apply for your full Class 5 licence (application fee $44.30).
  4. This involves passing a practical test (practical test fee $48.90) in a Class 5 combination vehicle or:
    • being assessed in a Class 5 combination vehicle against NZQA unit standards by an approved assessor www.ltsa.govt.nz
    • passing an approved industry training course www.ltsa.govt.nz for Class 5 combination vehicles.
